August's Most Popular Baby Names - 2011

Some of you have been watching True Blood. I can't say I blame you, or that I'm not guilty of it myself. This past season, arguably it's best thus far, has brought a lot of interesting characters and story lines to Bon Temps (Is it just me, or did this season fly by?). You may be wondering (with good reason) what a show about vampires, werewolves, wiccans, shapeshifters, and faeries has to do with our baby-naming site. Well, it seems quite a few of you have been searching Nymbler for the meaning behind the names of your favorite characters. In fact, two of our five new names for this month come directly from the show (see below). And this isn't the first time this has happened. Here are some other names from the series people have searched for:

Sookie
Lafayette
Hoyt
Claudine
Antonia
Portia
Luna

What's your favorite True Blood character name?

July's Most Popular Baby Names - 2011

Nowadays, almost everything we touch eventually makes its way onto cyber space, so it only makes sense that baby books would follow suit. With a relatively new app for your iPad (it's release date was January 12, 2011), Sweet Baby has done just that. This ingenious app (created by Brax-Apps) allows a level of interactivity that has never been possible with physical baby books and makes creating and updating your child's baby book fun and easy. This app is more than just your ordinary baby book; you can add videos and sounds clips as well as add your own customized pages (like a page to list all of the name possibilities you found on Nymbler you didn't choose!). With Sweet Baby you can capture your baby's first steps or first words or even the sound of his/her laughter while the two of you play "patty cake" – all on your iPad. It's also easy to share your book with friends and family members via email and there’s even an option to print your own copy.

Has anyone used this new way of documenting your baby's "firsts"? Tell us what you think!

Here are the names that were popular on Nymbler in July 2011. Are there any surprises?

June's Most Popular Baby Names - 2011

Weeks after Natalie Portman gave birth, someone finally let slip the name she and fiancĂ©, Benjamin Millepied gave their newborn baby boy, Aleph. The name (which is the first letter of the Hebrew alphabet) has created quite the stir and even landed Portman on more than one 'weirdest celebrity baby names' list, which in our opinion is completely unwarranted. There are several, more bizarre celebrity baby names that come to mind (ummm… how about Pilot Inspektor or Blue Angel?). Take a look at this list of Bizarre Celebrity Baby Names in 2011 and tell us what you think. Does 'Aleph' deserve the top spot?

In addition, we’d like to extend congratulations to David & Victoria Beckham who gave birth to a baby girl named Harper Seven and to Kate Hudson who had a baby boy with fiancĂ© Matt Bellamy and named him Bingham Hawn Bellamy!

Also, be sure to stay connected with Nymbler all month long by becoming a fan on Facebook and follow us on Twitter!

May's Most Popular Baby Names - 2011

It has been a very busy month in the world of baby names since Nymbler’s last post. In addition to the Social Security Administration releasing the top names of 2010, along with the uproar an Israeli couple caused when they named their new baby girl Like, after the popular Facebook ‘Like’ button, as well as several celebrity births (Pink, David Schwimmer, and Jennifer Connelly to name a few), a new app, now available for download on your iPhone called Kick to Pick, allows unborn babies to pick their own name by literally showing "signs of enthusiasm" (a.k.a. kicking) from inside their mother’s womb. Talk about empowerment.

Yes, it’s true; parents will no longer have to agonize over choosing the perfect name for their baby. Now, for only $.99, you too can purchase this app and be on your way to a lesser-stressed pregnancy. You begin by selecting from one of the gender-specific lists, place the device over your baby bump, tap the start button and let your baby do the rest. When the app feels the baby kick, the generator will stop and reveal the name he or she has chosen. Is anyone else reminded of the popular 1980’s television game show ‘Press Your Luck’? I am not sure this is the best way to go about picking a name for your baby and from the reviews the app has gotten so far (only 2 out of 5 stars according the App Store as of June 8, 2011), I’d say that other people agree. Anyway, isn’t half the fun of having a baby in choosing his/her name?

In news a bit closer to home, I am happy to announce Nymbler’s new & improved Facebook page. ‘Like’ us on Facebook and connect with us on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest in baby name news and trends all month long!

April's Most Popular Baby Names - 2011

Last month, Laura Kalehoff, Executive Editor for American Baby, wrote an interesting article discussing some new and different ways to name your baby. One of these ways is by combining two of your favorite names to form a new and unique baby name. Does any of this sound familiar? While Nymbler doesn’t necessarily take two names and combine them into one, it does take your favorite names and present you with several different alternatives. Or at the very least it will provide you with plenty of inspiration for you to do what Mariska Hagarty did. After giving birth last month, she named her new baby girl Amaya, a beautiful adaptation she said came from the name Maya.

We would also like to congratulate Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon who, following the birth of twins on April 30th, named their babies Monroe and Moroccan. After, a quick search on Nymbler for the name Moroccan, I did find out that baby name is very unique!
