Baby Name Inspiration: The Boys of Summer

Well, we’ve been busy working on all kinds of Nymbler projects lately, but it’s time to put down the wrench and wax philosophical on the all-important topic of baby name inspiration. And at this time of year, the boys of summer come to mind.

Here in Boston baseball is a pretty big deal. This year, we even have a celebrity Dad-to-be: Jonathan Papelbon. He and his wife, Ashley, are expecting their first child around New Year’s Day. Let’s give Nymbler the names of Mom and Dad Pabelbon for inspiration! Out come names like Lesley, Jolene, Dayna, Rusty, Rory, Jordan and Jarrod, and so many more.

So the great American pastime has much to offer for inspiration for children’s names- and in fact, with the great diversity of cultures that play on American teams, there are a wide variety of appellations to choose from.

Let’s take a look at that storied rivalry – the Red Sox versus the Yankees.

From Boston, how about these fantastic pitchers: Josh Beckett, Jon Lester, Daisuke Matsuzaka, and of course Jonathan Pabelbon. One can’t forget the pitching prowess of Curt Schilling, who’s presently on the inactive list nursing a bad shoulder. We can add another “J” name with team captain, Jason Varitek. Infielders like Dustin Pedroia and Kevin Youkilis come to mind, as do smash hitters David Ortiz and Manny (Manuel?) Ramirez. But please, if you don’t mind, we will skip Coco (Coco Crisp) for now…

Turning to our favorite baby-naming web site, if we type in Daisuke, Manuel, Jason, and Jonathan as inspirations, a host of exciting names emerge for both girl and boy babies: Chihiro, Misaki, Abigail, Sabina, Tabitha, Jesus, Luis, Marshall, Preston… the list goes on and on.

Turning to the Yankees, we can for the moment set aside bad boy Alex Rodriguez. But that leaves a lot of inspiring talent: Derek Jeter, closer Mariano Rivera, Matsui Hideki, catcher Jorge Posada and former Red Sox slugger Johnny Damon. We should probably mention quite a few more, but we shouldn’t give the Yankees too much airtime, after all.
But you can plug them into Nymbler if you want. Happy Hunting!

In the meantime we wish the Papelbons a peaceful and comfortable pregnancy, and hope they’ll use the Boston-grown Nymbler.com to name their little one!
